Do I need to get fit to try CrossFit?

I’ve heard this so many times throughout my career as a coach. Do I need to get fit to try CrossFit? I’ve gotten this question hundreds of times. I’m used to meeting a lot of new people. When people express interest in our gym I always love having them visit the space. I think everyone should have a choice on where they would like to workout. Choosing where you working is a very important choice. Whenever you choose to workout there are a series of important considerations you want to have:

Number one: Do you feel safe in the space?

Number two: Do you feel comfortable?

Number three: Do you like the coaches?

Number four: Do you like the training style?

If any of these don’t feel right I would say it’s a no go. Gyms in the Ottawa area are a dime a dozen. There are so many different types of gyms and ways you can choose to workout from the traditional globo gyms, yoga studios, bootcamps, zumba, rock climbing and the list goes on and on. What real question you want to be asking yourself is…What am I looking for? Any exercises program will work if you stick to one major principle. What’s the secret of fitness? “Consistency”. Find a program that will make you consistent. If you can be consistent like almost anything else in life. You’ll get great results.

What does CrossFit have to offer? CrossFit is functional training program that you do either on your own or with others around. The huge benefit of CrossFit is the fact that it’s more fun to do it with others. I think CrossFit gives the impression it’s only for the elite because in the media that’s what gets publicized the most. So lots of people think you have to be doing muscle ups, legless rope climbs, pistols. The reality is we do have some members who can do these movements regularly but they are the minority, not the majority. So what do you do when you can’t properly do a movement? Simple, you modify or scale it to your fitness level. The beauty of using the CrossFit principles is that you get stronger and your aerobic conditioning improves.

The key when starting at CrossFit Actus is starting slowly. Don’t be in a rush. Modify or scale the workouts to your fitness ability. We expect you to be out of shape when you begin training with us. We also expect you to have no idea what you’re doing. That’s why we’ve developed a great beginner program that gets you started slowly with the guidance of a coach. Someone who can tell you exactly what you’re doing right and wrong. We think it’s the best way to get started and the best way of seeing if CrossFit is a good fit for you.
