As we move through May and closer to the summer solstice on June 21st, something interesting starts happening across Ottawa: people naturally become more active, more energetic, and generally feel better.
Even though winter felt like it would never end and this spring has felt much colder than usual, our bodies are still responding to one major environmental shift, which is additional daylight.
The closer we get to summer, the longer the days become, and that increase in sunlight can have a profound effect on our circadian rhythm, energy levels, sleep quality, motivation, mood, and overall wellness.
At CrossFit Actus, we see it every year. Members start walking more, spending more time outside, training with more consistency, and generally feeling more alive.
What Is Circadian Rhythm?
Your circadian rhythm is essentially your body’s internal clock. It regulates things like:
- Sleep and wake cycles
- Hormone production
- Energy levels
- Mood
- Hunger
- Recovery
- Body temperature
- Alertness
The biggest factor controlling this clock is light exposure especially natural sunlight. Research consistently shows that daylight exposure helps regulate melatonin and cortisol production, both of which strongly affect sleep quality and daytime energy.
When daylight hours increase during spring and early summer, many people notice:
- Better mood
- Increased motivation
- More stable energy
- Improved sleep timing
- Greater desire to move and exercise
This is not just psychological. It is biological and part of who you are.
Ottawa and the Power of Seasonal Change
Living in a northern climate like Ottawa means we experience dramatic seasonal swings in daylight exposure.
In December, Ottawa gets roughly 8.5 hours of daylight.
By the summer solstice on June 21st, we get over 15.5 hours of daylight.
That is a massive difference for the human body.
Research on seasonal movement patterns shows that physical activity tends to rise significantly during spring and summer months, while sedentary behavior increases during fall and winter.
Many wearable tracker studies have also shown that average daily step counts can increase by approximately 1,000–2,000 steps per day during warmer, brighter months compared to winter months, largely due to:
- More outdoor recreation
- Longer evenings
- Increased social activity
- Better weather
- More exposure to sunlight
Even simple things like walking the dog, gardening, biking with the kids, or going for evening walks start happening more often. I’ve looked at my own personal statistics and found that during winter months I will typically get about 10-12k steps per day but during the spring and summer my numbers are usually about 14-16k steps per day. All those extra steps come from chasing my kids outdoors and longer walks with my number one best friend Winston.
Why We Feel Better This Time of Year
Longer daylight exposure influences serotonin production, which is closely tied to mood and feelings of wellbeing. Natural light exposure also helps synchronize our sleep cycles, helping many people feel less groggy in the mornings and more alert throughout the day.
This is one reason why spring and early summer often feel like a reset button.
People tend to:
- Sleep more consistently
- Spend more time outdoors
- Exercise more regularly
- Socialize more
- Feel more optimistic
And the best part?
Activity itself further reinforces healthy circadian rhythm patterns. Exercise, especially outdoors and earlier in the day, helps regulate your internal clock even more effectively.
In other words:
Better light exposure improves energy → more movement happens naturally → movement improves sleep and recovery → energy improves even further.
It becomes a positive cycle that repeats yearly.
But Consistency Still Matters
While longer days can help us feel more motivated, this time of year can also become surprisingly inconsistent for many people.
Schedules become busier.
Patios open and the beer flows easily on warm days.
Kids’ sports ramp up.
Weekends get packed.
Travel season begins.
And suddenly routines disappear.
That is why maintaining some level of structure is still super important even during the most beautiful months of the year.
At CrossFit Actus, one of our top 2 rules are:
#1: Consistency is key.
#2: Something is always better than nothing.
You do not need perfect workouts during busy spring and summer months.
But staying active consistently matters.
Even if that means:
- A 20-minute workout
- A walk after dinner
- Getting outside in the morning sun
- Playing with your kids
- Going for a bike ride
- Attending class even when motivation is low. After an especially hard workout I always ask the class. “Now how many of you would have been willing to do this workout on your own”. Working out with others around is way more fun.
Small consistent actions compound over time.
Make the Most of Ottawa’s Best Months
Despite the cold start to spring, Ottawa is slowly transitioning into one of the best stretches of the year.
The patios fill up.
The trails get busy.
People come back outside.
Energy rises across the city.
This is the season where movement starts feeling natural again.
Use it.
Get outside more.
Train consistently.
Walk more often.
Wake up with sunlight when possible.
Take advantage of the long evenings.
Your body was designed to respond to these seasonal changes.
And when you work with your circadian rhythm instead of against it, you often feel healthier, more energetic, and more motivated without forcing it.
Summer is coming.
Your body already knows it.
