What is Inflammation? and how it can affect you

At CrossFit Actis, we talk a lot about consistency, effort, and showing up. But there’s another piece of the puzzle that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves—and that’s inflammation.

Not the kind you see from a swollen ankle after a bad landing. I’m talking about the low-grade, chronic inflammation that quietly impacts how you feel, move, recover, and perform every single day.

What Is Inflammation, Really?

Inflammation is your body’s natural defense mechanism. It’s how your immune system responds to stress, injury, or harmful stimuli. In the short term, it’s a good thing. You train hard, your body gets inflamed, and then it adapts and comes back stronger.

But when inflammation becomes chronic, that’s when problems start.

Chronic inflammation can show up as:

  • Constant soreness or joint stiffness
  • Low energy
  • Brain fog
  • Poor digestion
  • Trouble recovering from workouts
  • Increased body fat despite effort

It’s subtle—but powerful.

What Drives Inflammation Up (and Down)?

Your daily habits either pour fuel on the fire… or help put it out.

Things that tend to increase inflammation:

  • Highly processed foods
  • Excess sugar
  • Refined carbohydrates (like wheat-heavy diets)
  • Poor sleep
  • Chronic stress
  • Sedentary lifestyle

Things that help reduce inflammation:

  • Whole, minimally processed foods
  • Regular movement and exercise
  • Quality sleep
  • Hydration
  • Stress management
  • Omega-3 fatty acids

What I Do Daily to Keep Inflammation Low

This isn’t theory for me—this is something I actively manage every single day in my daily habits.

Here are a few non-negotiables in my routine:

  • Green tea daily – Simple, consistent, and loaded with compounds that help reduce inflammation
  • Exercise every day – Even if it’s just 20 minutes, movement is medicine
  • Limiting sugar, wheat, and dairy – Not eliminated forever, but kept for a weekend treat
  • Fish oil supplementation – A reliable way to increase omega-3 intake and support recovery

None of these are extreme. But stacked together, day after day, they make a massive difference in how I feel.

The Vacation Reality Check

Last week, I went on vacation to Punta Cana with my three kids for their Spring Break. It was an amazing trip, we went with 5 other families from our neighbourhood gang so in total we were 27 people. The kids had tons of friends to play with all day long. We had tons of laughs, time in the pool, and just being present with them while they had an absolute blast.

And nutritionally? I was… let’s call it very liberal.

Buffets at all-inclusive resorts are a different game. Food is everywhere, all the time, and it’s designed to be as appealing as possible. I ate what I wanted, when I wanted—more sugar, more processed foods, more variety than I’d normally have in a typical day. Throw in a bunch of drinks as well.

And here’s the interesting part:

I didn’t notice it right away—but after a few days, I could feel the difference.

  • I felt more bloated
  • My joints were a bit stiffer
  • My energy wasn’t as steady
  • Recovery felt slower

That’s inflammation.

And it was a powerful reminder:
You don’t fully realize how good you feel on a solid routine… until you step away from it.

The Takeaway

This isn’t about perfection. I’m not here to tell you to never enjoy a vacation, never have dessert, or cut out entire food groups forever. I have zero regrets.

What this is about is awareness.

When you:

  • Eat well most of the time
  • Move your body consistently
  • Support your system with simple habits

You create a baseline where you feel good—really good.

And when you drift away from that, your body lets you know.

At CrossFit Actis, our goal isn’t just performance in the gym. It’s helping you build a lifestyle where you feel strong, energized, and capable—every single day.

Because at the end of the day we love our first two rules which are:
Consistency is Key. And something is always better than nothing.
