Summer Is Here: What to Expect (and How to Stay on Track)

Summer is finally here, and with the warmer weather comes something we see every year: people naturally become more active.

Longer days, nicer weather, more walks, yard work and landscaping, bike rides, trips to the beach or lake frotn cottage in Ottawa, and weekends outside all add up. On average, people tend to accumulate an extra 2,000–3,000 steps per day during the summer months, which is fantastic news for overall health, fitness, and energy levels.

But summer also comes with a few sneaky challenges.

Ice cream runs. Patio beers. Fruity drinks. BBQs. Cottage weekends. Extra snacks around the campfire.

None of these things are bad. In fact, enjoying summer is important. The problem happens when occasional treats quietly become daily habits.

As much as we wish it worked this way, you simply cannot outwork a consistently poor diet. If that was true my gym would be packed every summer.

A few extra walks each day are great, but they won’t automatically offset multiple high-calorie meals, drinks, and treats every week. This is why so many people get to late August or early September feeling frustrated after realizing they’ve gained about 10 pounds, their clothes fit tighter, and they feel like they’re starting over.

The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is balance.

Here are a few simple strategies that work:

  • Stay active outside of the gym whenever possible
  • Treat yourself occasionally — not automatically
  • Prioritize protein at meals to stay fuller longer
  • Keep your regular workout schedule consistent
  • Drink 1 glass of water in between alcoholic drinks
  • Remember that “all or nothing” thinking rarely works

At CrossFit Actus, we believe consistency is what creates long-term results. Summer should add to your lifestyle — not derail it.

Enjoy the patios. Enjoy the cottage weekends. Enjoy the ice cream.

Just make sure those things are part of your summer, not the foundation of it. Let’s be honest. You know when you’re overindulging.

Stay active. Stay consistent. And set yourself up so that when September comes around, you feel proud of the choices you made instead of wishing you had started sooner.
