At CrossFit Actus, we’ve always believed that fitness should build more than strength. It should build confidence, resilience, coordination, and a positive relationship with movement that lasts a lifetime.
That belief became even more personal when we saw the impact our Kids Program had on my own son.
Building the Foundation First
When my son was younger, up until about age five, we focused less on organized sports and more on life skills. We wanted him to learn how to swim, skate, move well, and become confident doing the kinds of things that help children grow into capable, independent humans.
Instead of rushing into competition, we focused on giving him a broad base of movement skills and confidence.
Looking back, that foundation matters more than many parents realize.
Confidence Through Capability
One of the biggest changes we noticed through our Kids Program was how much more comfortable he became in his own abilities.
As kids get stronger, more coordinated, and more aware of what their bodies can do, something important happens—they begin to trust themselves.
They stand taller.
They try harder things.
They stop doubting themselves as much.
That confidence carries over into school, sports, friendships, and everyday life.
Consistency Matters More Than Motivation
We’ve been doing CrossFit Kids with my son for over a year now, and like most children, his excitement comes in waves.
There have been stretches where he’s been eager to go, full of energy, and counting down the days until class. There have also been times where he hasn’t felt like going at all.
As parents, our personal decision has been to keep him committed and have him continue showing up, even on the days when motivation is low.
Why?
Because life is full of moments where we have to do worthwhile things even when we don’t feel like it.
Learning that discipline early can be incredibly valuable. It teaches kids that feelings can change, motivation comes and goes, but commitment and consistency creates results.
Often, once class starts, the hesitation disappears and he ends up having a great time.
That lesson may be just as important as any squat, jump, or workout.
Training That Transfers to Sport
Now that he’s older, he plays hockey. And one thing that has stood out is how naturally explosive and fast he is on the ice despite having terrible stick handling.
Of course, playing hockey helps build hockey skills. But I truly believe a lot of that athleticism was developed through the training he did in our Kids Program.
Movements like:
- Squatting
- Hinging
- Jumping
- Landing properly
- Running
- Changing direction quickly
These patterns build strength, coordination, balance, and power, all things that transfer directly into sports like hockey.
Kids don’t always need sport-specific training. Often, they simply need to become better athletes.
Why Our Program Works
One thing we’ve noticed is that many kids in our program are not regularly involved in sports. Most kids who do regular sports have a hard time committing to the program on a weekly basis.
That’s exactly why this kind of environment matters.
Not every child wants to play competitive sports. Not every child thrives in team settings. But every child benefits from learning how to move, gain confidence, and feel successful physically.
Our goal is to create that space. That’s the main reason we only allow 8 kids to take part at once.
Fun First, Especially When They’re Young
With younger kids, fun has to come first.
That’s why our classes are designed to alternate between activities and games:
Activity → Game → Activity → Game
This keeps kids engaged, smiling, and excited to come back.
Because when kids enjoy movement, consistency follows. And consistency is where the real progress happens.
As they grow older, we can introduce more structure, technique, and focused coaching. But when they’re young, the priority is simple:
Make fitness fun enough that they want more of it.
More Than Exercise
Our Kids Program isn’t about creating elite athletes.
It’s about helping kids become:
- More confident
- Stronger
- Faster
- More coordinated
- More resilient
- More willing to try new things
If athletic success comes later, that’s a bonus.
But the real win is helping kids believe in themselves.
