The Quiet Power of Late December

December is chaos.

Speaking personally, all the Holiday parties, end-of-year deadlines, kids’ concerts, travel, bad weather, good food everywhere. It feels like it’s never going to end. All this is crammed in 3 weeks time because realistically nothing happens after the 21st of December. From the outside, it feels like a month you just survive.

But here’s the interesting part: the very end of December is different.

By now, most of the noise has settled. The big events are behind us. The calendar finally has some white space. And that makes late December one of the best times of the year—not for doing more, but for reflecting.

Step Back Before You Charge Forward

Most people wait until January 1st to think about change. New goals, new plans, new habits.

We think that’s backwards.

Late December is the perfect moment to zoom out and look at the month and year as a whole:

  • What went well, even when life was hectic?
  • Where did you show up when it wasn’t convenient or easy?
  • Where did things fall apart—and why?

This isn’t about judging yourself. It’s about awareness. You can’t build better habits if you don’t understand the ones you already have. Most times not showing up or falling short on expectations is a problem of purpose. The thing you say is important maybe isn’t as important as you think it is. Actions will always speak louder than words.

Consistency Doesn’t Mean Perfection

At CrossFit Actus, we talk a lot about consistency. Our number 1 rule is “Consistency is king”—not because it’s flashy, but because it’s honest.

December rarely looks perfect:

  • Maybe workouts were shorter
  • Maybe you trained fewer days
  • Maybe nutrition wasn’t dialed in

And yet… you still showed up.

That matters more than you think.

Late December is a reminder that consistency isn’t about ideal weeks. It’s about continuing to act—even when conditions aren’t ideal. If you trained some days, moved a little, or made one good decision when things were busy, that’s a win. This brings us to rule #3. Progress over perfection.

Take Stock of Your Time

One powerful exercise this time of year is simply asking:

Where did my time actually go this month?

Not where you wish it went—but where it truly went.

Time spent with family
Time spent moving your body
Time spent resting
Time spent stressed
Time spent scrolling

There’s no right or wrong answer here. But there is value in noticing patterns. Awareness creates choice—and choice is where progress starts.

Carry the Lessons Forward

You don’t need a dramatic reset on January 1st.

Instead, take what December taught you:

  • What routines held up under pressure?
  • What fell apart when things got busy?
  • What helped you feel better, stronger, or calmer?

Those answers are far more useful than any New Year’s resolution. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Reflect and just do better.

Finish the Year Intentionally

Late December isn’t about doing more.
It’s about closing the year with intention.

Reflect. Acknowledge effort. Learn from the messy parts. And remind yourself that progress is built quietly—through consistency, through imperfect action, through showing up when life is full.

At CrossFit Actus, we don’t chase perfection, we chase progress. That allows us build momentum.

And late December is the perfect place to notice how far you’ve already come.
