It’s taken us years to craft the 3 rules our gym lives by. In case you missed this first and second, here they are. You might have heard us repeat these rules more than once. They’re simple by design, but they’re not accidental.
Rule #3 is one of the most important:
Progress over perfection.
At first glance, it sounds obvious. Of course progress matters more than being perfect… right?
But in practice, this rule might be the one that holds people back the most — especially in fitness.
Let’s talk about what it really means, and how it shows up in real life inside (and outside) the gym.
What “Progress Over Perfection” Actually Means
Progress over perfection means accepting that doing something imperfectly is almost always better than doing nothing at all.
It means understanding that:
- You don’t need the “perfect” program
- You don’t need the “perfect” week
- You don’t need the “perfect” nutrition plan
- You don’t need the “perfect” mindset before you start
You just need to move forward, one small step at a time and therefore, consistently.
Perfection feels safe. Progress feels messy and chaotic.
And real results live in the messy middle.
Scenario #1: “I Missed a Few Workouts, So I’ll Start Again Next Week”
This is one of the most common traps.
You miss a couple of classes. Life gets busy. Motivation dips. Suddenly the week feels “ruined,” so you decide you’ll reset on Monday.
But here’s the truth:
- One workout this week is better than zero
- Two workouts are better than one
- Showing up today beats the perfect plan tomorrow
Progress is cumulative. Fitness doesn’t disappear because you missed a few days — but momentum does when you stop altogether.
At Actus, we’d rather see you walk in for a single session than wait weeks trying to line everything up perfectly.
Scenario #2: Scaling Feels Like “Failure”
This one hits hard for a lot of people.
You see a workout on the board:
- Heavy barbell
- Pull-ups
And you think, “I should be able to do this by now.”
So instead of scaling appropriately, you either:
- Push weights you shouldn’t
- Rush reps with poor movement
- Or skip the workout entirely
Scaling isn’t a step backward — it’s how progress actually happens.
Choosing a weight you can move well, a variation you can control, or a rep scheme that keeps you safe is how you build strength, confidence, and longevity. These matter the most.
Perfect workouts don’t exist.
Smart workouts do.
Scenario #3: Nutrition Is “All or Nothing”
People often think nutrition needs to be flawless to “count.”
It’s all about organic chicken breast and broccoli. Then, they eat one unplanned meal and think:
“Well, today’s blown… I’ll start again tomorrow.”
But progress-focused thinking looks like this:
- One balanced meal is still a win
- Drinking more water today matters
- Adding protein matters
- Eating vegetables more often matters
You don’t need perfect eating habits.
You need slightly better ones, repeated over time.
Consistency beats intensity here — every time.
Scenario #4: Comparing Yourself to Others
This is where perfectionism hides quietly.
You look around the gym and see:
- Faster runners
- Stronger lifters
- People who “make it look easy”
And suddenly your own progress feels small.
But progress is personal.
The only meaningful comparison is:
You today vs. you six months ago.
At CrossFit Actus, we don’t measure success by leaderboard positions or Rx checkmarks. We measure it by:
- Showing up more often
- Moving better
- Feeling stronger
- Feeling more confident in your body
That’s real progress.
Why This Rule Matters So Much
Perfection is fragile.
Progress is resilient.
Perfection disappears the moment life gets complicated.
Progress survives busy schedules, bad sleep, missed workouts, and imperfect weeks.
That’s why Rule #3 exists.
Because long-term success isn’t built on flawless execution — it’s built on showing up again and again, even when things aren’t ideal.
The Takeaway
If you remember nothing else, remember this:
- You don’t need to be perfect to make progress
- You don’t need perfect weeks to get results
- You don’t need perfect motivation to show up
You just need to keep moving forward, one step at a time.
