When people are looking for a gym, one of the first things they compare is price, schedule, or equipment. One thing that often gets overlooked, however, is class size.
At CrossFit Actus, we’ve made a very intentional decision to cap almost all of our classes at 10 members. While many gyms continue to increase class sizes to fit more people into each session, we’ve chosen to go in the opposite direction.
Why?
Because we believe that smaller classes produce better coaching, stronger relationships, and ultimately better long-term results.
Better Coaching Means Better Progress
The biggest advantage of a smaller class is simple: more coaching.
With only 10 athletes in a class, our coaches have the time to actually coach.
That means:
- Helping you improve your movement mechanics.
- Adjusting workouts to fit your current fitness level.
- Providing individual feedback throughout the workout.
- Catching small technique errors before they become bad habits or injuries.
- Celebrating your personal victories as you improve.
Whether you’re walking into your very first CrossFit class or you’ve been training for years, everyone benefits from personalized attention.
Good coaching isn’t about yelling louder or motivating harder, it’s really about understanding the person standing in front of you and helping them become 1% better every day.
You Become More Than Just Another Face
Walk into a class of 30 or 40 people and it’s easy to disappear into the crowd.
In a class of 10, that’s impossible.
Within a few weeks, you’ll know the people who train beside you. You’ll celebrate their first pull-up, cheer when they hit a personal record, and notice when they haven’t been around for a few days.
The coaches notice too.
When classes stay small, coaches get to know far more than your name. They learn about your goals, your injuries, your family, your work schedule, and what motivates you. That relationship allows us to coach you more effectively because we’re coaching the person, not just the workout.
That accountability makes a huge difference.
When people know you’re usually at the 6:00 a.m. class and you miss a few days, someone notices.
When you’ve been working toward your first box jump or your first strict pull-up, everyone is excited to see you finally achieve it.
That type of encouragement simply happens naturally when people genuinely know one another.
A Community That Actually Feels Like One
You’ll hear the word “community” used by almost every gym out there.
For us, it’s not just a marketing phrase.
Community isn’t created by putting more people into a room.
Community is created when people consistently train together, get to know each other, and genuinely care about one another’s success.
Small classes really make that possible.
Over time, your class starts to feel like a team. Members encourage each other through difficult workouts, celebrate milestones together, and support one another both inside and outside the gym.
That’s why our community events are so important, whether it’s the CrossFit Open, the Actus Games, or our annual Christmas party, they make the gym feel so special. You’re not walking into a room full of strangers. You’re spending time with people you’ve trained beside all year.
Fitness becomes something you enjoy sharing instead of something you have to force yourself to do alone.
The Energy Is Different
Some people assume that bigger classes automatically create more energy. While they create more energy it comes at a cost.
A close-knit group of 10 people who genuinely know each other creates an atmosphere that’s hard to replicate.
People cheer louder because they know the person finishing the workout.
They celebrate harder because they understand how much that milestone means.
They push one another because everyone wants to see the group succeed.
The workout becomes something you’re doing with your friends instead of simply next to strangers.
That positive energy is one of the biggest reasons people continue showing up week after week.
Consistency Is What Creates Results
At CrossFit Actus, we often remind our members of our first rule:
Rule #1: Consistency is Key.
The best workout program in the world doesn’t work if you don’t show up.
Small group coaching makes consistency easier because people actually look forward to coming to class.
You’re not just coming to exercise.
You’re coming to train with people you know.
You’re coming to see coaches who know your goals.
You’re coming to improve with a group that’s invested in your success.
When exercise becomes something you enjoy instead of something you have to force yourself to do, consistency follows naturally.
Some Days Won’t Be Perfect—and That’s Okay
Life gets busy.
Kids get sick.
Work becomes stressful.
Schedules change.
That’s why our second rule is:
Rule #2: Something is Better Than Nothing.
Maybe today you can’t give 100%.
Maybe you only have enough energy for a scaled workout.
Maybe you simply showed up after a long day because you knew your classmates would be there.
That’s still a win.
Our community doesn’t expect perfection.
We simply encourage one another to keep moving forward.
Small Improvements Add Up
Our third rule is one we come back to constantly:
Rule #3: Progress Over Perfection.
Fitness isn’t built in one workout.
It’s built by showing up consistently over months and years.
Small classes allow coaches to recognize those small improvements that often go unnoticed.
Five extra pounds on a lift.
One more push-up.
A little better movement quality.
Greater confidence.
Those improvements compound over time into life-changing results.
Why Saturdays Are Different
If you’ve trained with us before, you know there’s one exception to our 10-person rule.
Saturdays
Saturday is our team workout where 7 teams of 2 pair up. There may be 14 people in the gym but only 7 people working at once.
It’s longer.
It’s sweatier.
It’s louder.
It’s designed to bring everyone together.
While our weekday classes focus on personalized coaching in small groups, Saturdays are all about celebrating the community we’ve built throughout the week.
Members partner up, encourage one another, meet athletes from different class times, and finish the week with an incredible amount of energy.
It’s one of the highlights of our week because it reminds us that while we train in small groups, we’re all part of one larger Actus family.
Why We Won’t Change
Could we fit more people into each class?
Absolutely.
But that’s never been our goal.
Our goal has always been to provide exceptional coaching, build meaningful relationships, and create a community where people genuinely enjoy showing up.
Keeping our classes small helps us do exactly that.
It’s one of the biggest reasons members stay with us for years, not because they’re forced to, but because they’ve found a place where they feel supported, challenged, and known.
At the end of the day, we don’t believe fitness should feel anonymous.
We believe your coaches should know your name.
We believe your classmates should notice when you’re missing.
We believe hard workouts are better when they’re shared with people who care about your success.
Because when coaching is personal and community is genuine, consistency becomes easier, and consistency is what changes lives. Come meet us by clicking here.
