CrossFit’s best friend and enemy
The clock is CrossFit’s best friend and enemy. The clock pushes you to surpass your limits and it gives
you an objective to strive for. It tells you whether or not you did better than last time. It’s concrete
data that pushes you to go well beyond your own motivation. Fran would not be Fran without the
objective to shave off precious seconds off your last time.
But the clock is also CrossFit’s enemy. It sometimes makes us want to cut corners just to get that better
time. It makes us skip a few reps just to finish before our friend. It makes us ignore the no reps when
we know very well that our chest never touched the bar in the chest to bar pull-up.

It’s important to remember that even when the clock is ticking, the quest for virtuosity remains the most
fundamental part of CrossFit. By cheating our reps or technique, we are only cheating ourselves. We all
want to win! It’s part of our CrossFit nature. But let’s not do it to the detriment of our integrity and our
