Mom, Wife, Teacher, psychologist, neighbourhood snack maker, organizer, planner of events, payer of bills, cleaner of house, creator of fun activities., walker of dog, wiper of tears, worrier, meal planner, grocery shopper. If you are anything like me, somewhere between University, starting a career and having children I lost myself. I lost Julie, Julie the adventurer, Julie the writer, Julie the canoer, Julie the book lover. I lost her somewhere between cloth diapers, report cards and midday park visits and in July 2016 I realized that if I didn’t find her, if I didn’t make room for self-care and self-reflection; my mental and physical health were going to continue to deteriorate. Crossfit had been on my radar for a few years thanks to a friends on and off posts about how much she loved it and on July 18, 2016, I walked into Crossfit Actus for my Free Trial with Jonathan. The last year has been transformative in more ways than I probably even realize. Carving out an hour a day for ME, where I can unplug and cast aside my worries, where I can be surrounded by likeminded people who value community and togetherness as much as I do […]

Basics Pieces (Part 1): Chew your food. Chew 30+ times before every swallow. More for meats as they require more chews to break down. Can be less for fruits and vegetables depending on the food. Think about how much fibre it contains. The more you chew the better you will digest your food and the faster it will fill you up. Also why you want to take your time when eating. Not rushed. Sit, relax breath. Low stress. No screens ideally, talk to people if they are around. Try it just once this week.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to do a workout without a clock? If the coach yelled out 3…2…1…Go! but there was no clock running down? If you walked in the gym to find a whiteboard filled with John: Done, Tina: Done, Tim: Done; would you do as well without a number to compare yourself to? Would you push yourself as hard for those last reps if you never knew how many seconds you had left? CrossFit’s best friend and enemy The clock is CrossFit’s best friend and enemy. The clock pushes you to surpass your limits and it gives you an objective to strive for. It tells you whether or not you did better than last time. It’s concrete data that pushes you to go well beyond your own motivation. Fran would not be Fran without the objective to shave off precious seconds off your last time. But the clock is also CrossFit’s enemy. It sometimes makes us want to cut corners just to get that better time. It makes us skip a few reps just to finish before our friend. It makes us ignore the no reps when we know very well that our chest […]

Don’t be that guy at the gym who leaves blood all over the bars from ripped hands. Don’t be that galwho posts pictures of ripped hands all over Facebook. Don’t be that guy who walks around the gym smelling like New Skin for weeks at a time. Protect your hands!!! Yes, protect your hands! I have been doing CrossFit for over three years and I still tape my hands when I see 75 pull-ups posted on the board. And I still protect my thumbs when I have to clean or snatch more than 20 times in a row. I know my hands. And I know they have a threshold. I remember walking into the medical section after the 100s workout at the 2013 Regionals to get a well-deserved massage only to find a bunch of weeping men with their hands bleeding and torn up from all the pull-ups. And all I could think was; do they know they have to deadlift in an hour?!? Remember that ripped hands means that your workout will suffer for a whole week. So choose wisely. Take the time to tape your hands before a workout or see your performance suffer while your hands heal […]
